Willernie, originally named, Wildwood Manor, got its start in 1914. Built to resemble a rambling English village, it was a small community of summer cottages. Development of the community, like many others in the area, was tied to the development of rail lines. Legend has it that Ma Barker’s boys and their gang frequented Dick’s Inn back in 1932. Members of the gang were said to live in Willernie, traveling to St. Paul to commit crimes. Over the years the village acquired police protection, paved streets and sidewalks, city water, sewer and gas. Today there are over 500 residents, and the area shares its commercial district with Mahtomedi. |
